Accidents Caused to Pedestrians by Drivers Using Cell Phones

It only takes a second. In the time that it takes for a driver to glance at his cell phone to see who is calling, to dial a number, or to check a text a serious pedestrian accident can occur.

The driver may not see the crosswalk, may not realize that the light has changed to red, or may not see the child walking the dog on the side of the street.

While the accident may stun the driver, it can cause serious injury or death to a pedestrian.  The pedestrian lacks the protection that the car driver has and any impact, even at a slow speed, can cause a traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, internal injury, broken bones, or even death.

If you know someone who talks on a cell phone, texts, or who is otherwise distracted while driving then we encourage you to share this page with that person.  Perhaps knowing that a glance at a cell phone may end up taking someone’s life will be enough for that person to put the cell phone away while behind the wheel of the car.  Perhaps a pedestrian will live because the driver knew the potential consequences of her actions.
